"The checker board pattern is original from a WWI training squadron. The center line of the pattern divides the checker boards. So one tip is blue and the other tip is white. One strut is blue and the other is white. And I like the way the checker board is split mid line of the leading and trailing edges. That made the paint in the hand hold on the top wing a challenge to layout and paint. The checker board is centered on the fuselage the same and matches the wing and the top of the horizontal stab. Just as the red and white stripes underneath the wing and stab match front to rear. Howard's pattern was more traditional. The checker boards wrapped around the leading edge and were symmetrical left to right. This was the hardest paint scheme I have ever done!" Steve Culp
